Reducing Volcanic Risk in Cumbre Vieja, La Palma, Canary Islands.
For the Vocanic surveillance in Cumbre Vieja has been mainly used conventional geophysical methods, and only 5 years ago a geochemical program is being developed to improve and complement the surveillance of this volcanic building.
Since 1997 ITER has been carrying out works to improve and optimize the volcanic surveillance of Cumbre Vieja volcano. A geochemical station for volcanic watch operates in the framework of this porject. The station is located in the well of Amargavinos (Breña Baja) and it makes continous monitoring and measure of the chemical and isotopic composition of dissolved gases in subterranean waters by means of a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) and an alpha spectrometer as well. This allows defining a set of important geochemical parameters, which are sensitive to magmatic reactivation process.
