Abstract

After the disastrous earthquakes happened on the 13 of January and on the 13 of February of 2001 in El Salvador, the University and the Government of El Salvador, being aware of the possibility that high level earthquakes could reactivate volcanic systems, asked the Spanish International Cooperation Agency (AECI) for the scientific-technical support of ITER with the aim of improving the program of volcanic watch in this Centroamerican country.

In the framework of this project, ITER has installed the first geochemical net for volcanic watch in Latine America. This net consists of 6 geochemical stations that improve and optimize the detection of early alert signals of crisis in 4 Salvadorian volcanic systems: Santa Ana-Izalco-Coatepeque, San Salvador, San Vicente y San Miguel. The aim of this project is to introduce a system of telemetry for an on-line central reception of data at the campus of el Salvador University.
