Project Summary

Since July 2009 the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER), dependant organism of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, and TVE in the Canary Islands work together in the creation and execution of the program TELEPLANETA; a new TV space which seeks to inform about the impact of natural risks in our society living an incentive the culture's development and innovation, in order to contribute in the reduction of the natural risks.

TELEPLANETA is a new program entirely developed in Canary Islands for the world by its broadcast in the Channel 24 hours of TVE. This program, which is also broadcasted weekly in channel 2 of TVE for the Canary Islands, is directed by the geologist David Calvo, and is a joint bid of ITER and TVE in the Canary Islands.

Approximately 75% of the world's population lives in areas that have been affected, at least once in the last 20 years by an earthquake, a tropical cyclone, floods or a draught. The importance of the consequences that being exposed constantly to natural hazards have upon the human development have been recently acknowledged.

Natural disasters are intimately related with the human development process, and they put this development at risk. Likewise, the decisions in matter of development made by communities, and nations can also generate new dangers of disasters. This does not need to be like this, the human development can also contribute efficiently to the reduction of these dangers.

The broadcast of TELEPLANETA, aims to promote awareness of the impact of natural hazards to encourage a culture that contributes to a better relationship between Humanity and Planet Earth. This activity is closely related to the objectives of the International Year of Planet Earth proclaimed by the General Assembly of United Nations in its session on December 22, 2005, contributing to the reduction of natural hazards on Planet Earth and how to promote the concern about Earth sciences in society and encourage youth to the study of Earth Sciences at the university.

The weekly broadcast of this bulletin will raise awareness to the viewers about the dynamics of the planet we inhabit, a living planet that sometimes shows its most spectacular and dramatic face, putting in danger the lives of not only individuals but the very sustainability of communities and entire countries. Once a week TELEPLANETA will take us to various parts of the world where natural hazards have occurred through an impressive show where the images will be the protagonists.
