The Wind Energy Department takes over the management of the three Wind Farms existing in ITER, as well as the proposals for the installation of future Wind Farms. It is in charge of all the projects related with wind energy, and takes over the design, operation and the carrying out of experiences in the wind tunnel.

Moreover, since last year and due to new policy demands of the electricity sector, the electrical output of the ITER´s three Wind Farms is forecasted. These predictions are made using complex calculations, using powerful meteorological models based on physical models and real data. Work is currently done on the adjustment and improvement of these predictions.

In the future a weather portal will be available on the web, which will offer weather predictions in the Canary Islands (data of temperature, wind speed, dynamic graphics, etc.).

Another interesting research line related with insular territories and 100% renewable communities in which the Department has developed a series of projects.

Among the developed activities by the Wind Energy Department:

Wind Farm Management

Within the whole of the operation task of the wind farms, several managements must be done parallel to the maintenance of the farms, like for example the generation of reports for the different public organisms, the statistics of energetic generation and availability, the farm´s invoicing and the daily previsions of hour generation of the installations for its future sale in the electric energy market.

These tasks are carried out by the Wind Energy Department, which apart from providing administrative support to the maintenance tasks carried out by the corresponding departments, also and simultaneously, carries out projects of new installations, or the improvement of existing ones, like in the repowering of the operating Wind Farms in Granadilla.

Wind Tunnel

An aerodynamic Tunnel for civil tryouts has different applications and is used for the achievement of projects in which ITER participates, as well as to render services to other people interested. These services can be hired by two different in ways:

  • Renting hours of tunnel use with an operator at a fix cost.
  • Carrying out projects or analysis as specified in the budget.

The staff of ITER´s Wind Energy Department will respond to your questions about budgets, costs or type of test required and that can be done in the tunnel.

Dissemination Projects

This department is nowadays involved into several projects related with RE systems implementation on islands and 100% renewable systems, whether in research or diffusion.
